JAL Business Class Boeing 767

Continuing our journey after a fantastic experience in Japan Airlines First Class from JFK to Haneda, and a 2-day stopover in Tokyo, we boarded yet another JAL Business Class flight JL725 on the Boeing 767, flying from Tokyo Narita Airport to Jakarta, Indonesia.

As a oneworld Emerald elite, I had the privilege of accessing the Japan Airlines First Class Lounge Narita, where we spent about an hour enjoying its luxurious amenities before our flight. Last year, I had to embark on some extreme mileage runs on Alaska Airlines to retain MVP GOLD 75K for 2023, and that really paid off.

Although, business class passengers without Emerald status can access the JAL Sakura Lounge, which is the airline’s lounge for both business class and oneworld Sapphire passengers.

Cabin and Seat Comfort:

Upon boarding the JAL Business Class Boeing 767, we noticed that the Business Class cabin appeared a bit dated. Although, this wasn’t shocking to us, since this is an intra-Asia flight booked with additional 5,000 Alaska Airlines miles.

However, despite its age, the seats provided a reasonable level of comfort. The lie-flat bed on the other hand, while not ideal in terms of height, still allowed for some restful sleep. I’ll speak more on that in a moment. And while the cabin could benefit from a refresh, it didn’t significantly impact the overall experience.

The JAL Business Class Boeing 767 cabin is arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, giving every passenger a direct-aisle access. The cabin consists of 24 business class seats from Row 1 to 6. As a datapoint, seats 6A and 6K are both missing a window each, while the bulkhead seats 1A and 1K has 3 windows each.

The tray table is located underneath the entertainment screen, and both power outlet and USB port are located right above this table.

Dining Experience:

While the dining experience on this Japan Airlines Business Class flight JL725 didn’t quite match the level of excellence seen in the First Class, it still offered a decent selection of gourmet dishes. The food presentation, however, fell slightly short of expectations. Nevertheless, the meals were well-prepared and showcased the airline’s commitment to culinary quality. On this flight, Mrs. The Points Engineer opted for the Japanese option on the menu.

For me, I decided to go for the Western option. Hors-d’oeuvre on the Western Menu was the Chicken Consommé Aspic (Caviar, which tasted meh). But to be fair, I commend JAL for providing caviar in business class.

In-flight Entertainment and Amenities:

The in-flight entertainment system offered a diverse selection of movies, TV shows, and music to keep passengers entertained during the flight. The touchscreen interface was user-friendly and responsive, making it easy to navigate through the available options. To my very surprise, the IFE system on this JAL Sky Suite II was better than that in First Class cabin on the airline’s Boeing 777.

And the noise-canceling headphones provided good audio quality, enhancing the immersive entertainment experience. Amenity kit on this 8-hour flight from Tokyo to Jakarta consisted of slippers, moisture mask, eye mask, toothbrush, and earplugs.

I have to say that the JAL Business Class Boeing 767 bed made the list of my least-favorite lie-flat bed on an airplane. Not only that the bed was too close to the ground, but the footrest was also narrow which made getting in and out of bed a mission. Other than that, the bed provided a good quality sleep even with no mattress pad.

Service and Hospitality:

The cabin crew on this flight JL725 demonstrated the renowned Japanese hospitality throughout the journey. They were professional, attentive, and proactive in catering to passengers’ needs. Despite any shortcomings in the cabin or food presentation, the exceptional service provided by the crew contributed to a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere both onboard and on the ground. 

As the cabin crew gracefully prepared the cabin for landing, the anticipation of experiencing the Indonesian capital before we continue our journey to Bali grew further as I peer out the window seeing the sprawling cityscape of Jakarta.

Our flight landed at 4:45pm Indonesia time and we taxied on the runway for another 10 minutes before reaching our gate at the CGK airport Terminal 3.

In Conclusion:

Booking the entire trip, including the Japan Airlines First Class and Business Class flights, with 75,000 Alaska Airlines miles was a remarkable value. Strategic mileage redemption allowed us to experience premium travel at a fraction of the cost, despite some minor drawbacks in certain aspects of the flight.

Japan Airlines Flight JL725 Business Class on the Boeing 767 provided a comfortable and enjoyable journey from Tokyo Narita to Jakarta. While the cabin appeared dated and the lie-flat bed was lower than desired, the overall experience was still pleasant. The in-flight entertainment, dining options, and exceptional service from the cabin crew contributed to a positive travel experience. Although the food presentation didn’t match the exquisite standards of Japan Airlines, it remained of good quality. Considering the value obtained through mileage redemption, this flight served as a satisfactory choice for our journey.
