GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS: THE TALLEST SWING IN THE WORLD. The B!G RUSH of Adrenaline
Durban, South Africa is a coastal city situated in the eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Even though I lived in South Africa for 7 years and been back there again 3 times within the past 3 years; I have never been to Durban. So, this time around, visiting Durban was at the top of my things to do.
Driving from Johannesburg to Durban took roughly 6 hours. That’s about 352 miles (567 km). If you’re doing this drive as a tourist, do be careful as South Africa is known to have speed cameras all around everywhere. The last thing you want to come back with from your trip is speeding tickets.
After that 6 hours drive, I was ready for dinner. As a seafood lover, one of my favorite and South Africa’s most loved seafood restaurant is Ocean Basket.
We headed out to the Ocean Basket Durban Beachfront. The waterfront promenade runs from Ushaka, to the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the Durban Botanical Gardens, just to mention a few.
After settling in at the restaurant, I ordered my favorite “Platter for 1” (3 mussels, 6 prince prawns, fish, calamari & calamari heads), paired with Sushi. Excellent choice
Platter for 1
Since I’m in Durban and being an adrenaline lover; it was a perfect time to finally check that “Guinness World Record’s Tallest Swing in the World at Moses Mabhida Stadium” off the travel lists. Having jumped from The Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas, floated through the sky in a hot air balloon, it was quite easier to jump from the top of Moses Mabhida Stadium. Even though different thoughts started coming in. thoughts like “dude, are you crazy”? “you sure you’re going to sign that waiver for this”? what if? etc.
If you can see the tiny people in red, that’s the jumping platform
The jump was all about having fun, conquering fear, and also adding to the list of adrenaline certificates. All of these requires taking a leap of faith.
Checking in was pretty smooth, and the attendant was very courteous while fitting the harness on me. She explained what she was doing, and why she was doing it. A good safety practice is never out of fashion!
Checked in yet? #bigrushdurban
At this point, it was showtime before the main showtime. It was time to get to the jumping platform, the top of the stadium. There are 2 options as to getting to the top of the stadium. You can either ride the sky car to the top, or you can choose the second option which is hiking 352 stepsto the top. Whichever one you choose; you are still presented with 360 degrees views of Durban. I went for the second option.
The 352 steps hiking. That’s about 25 – 30 floors high
Hiking my way up to the top of the stadium
Here I was practicing my jump before the main jump lol
After signing the death warrant (you’re probably saying this guy is crazy, I know), it was now time for reality. By the way, one of my friends opted out while the other one almost chickened out. She was literally negotiating, “i don’t want my money back, plz I just want to go back”lmao. Again, even though it was fun to do, I must say it’s not as easy as it looks.
Really, the B!G Rush jump was a BIG RUSH indeed. Even though the countdown three, two, one, jump sounded pretty familiar to me, it still wasn’t as easy as three, two, one, sounded.
Final thoughts:
Although the jump was quick, but I must say it was very intense. Was it scary? Oh yeah, very scary. My stomach churned just looking down seeing those thousands of empty seats in that stadium looking very tiny like ants. But hey, it’s adrenaline, I didn’t expect anything less.
Certificate for getting into the swing of things
This is one experience of a lifetime, and I’m glad I was able to check it off my travel lists. As an adrenaline junkie, we’re always looking forward to the next one.
Thanks for reading.
Wondering what I did after getting back to Johannesburg?

Kayode currently holds higher status on multiple airlines and hotel programs. He has visited 4 continents, 30 countries, and 35 of the 50 US states.
He began his adventure journey after selling his first cellphone ever, and used the money to apply for his first passport. He said to himself, “I’d rather have a passport than a cellphone”. And since then, he has been globetrotting.
