Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja
by Kayode
Setting inspiring standards with its’ contemporary décor well suited for all kinds of travelers, the Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja is the next “big thing” as far as hotels in Lagos mainland is concerned. On our last trip to Lagos Nigeria, we spent a quick night here at the Marriott during our 16-nights stay at the Sheraton Lagos Hotel located a short distance away.
The moment we stepped our foot at the lobby after going through the rigorous security checks, it became apparent how this hotel made the list of best hotels in Lagos, Nigeria. Let’s dive into the review.
Depending on the time of the day, the Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja is located about fifteen minutes away from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, and approximately an hour away from Lagos Island.
The decor and ambiance of the lobby and everywhere throughout the hotel was aesthetically pleasing, and I for a second said to myself that this property beats most other Marriott hotels in America hands down.
The modern African vibe lobby area has several seats where one can get comfy or can simply unwind with a drink at the lobby bar.
At check-in, for being a Marriott Ambassador elite, I was upgraded to a 1 Bedroom Executive Suite which was tastefully designed and featured a balcony overlooking the pool and other parts of the hotel/city. This was absolutely one of the best ways to have redeemed 20,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.
I was greeted by the David, the front desk manager who also informed me that their Director would be happy to meet me later in the day. As part of the elite benefits at this hotel, I was offered a generous welcome gift option, which is in addition to breakfast in the M Club.
Stepping out of the elevator on the third floor while making my way to the room, I paused for a moment again, saying to myself, “if only the people in government would build a modern and functional airport as beautiful as this.”
The 1 Bedroom Executive King had plenty of space to move around, and featured an oversized sectional couch, another day lounger, coffee table, a 4-seater dining table, another table with 2 lamps, an inbuilt flatscreen TV, illy coffee machine with pods, and teas.
And in case you couldn’t snag a suite at this Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja, then your bedroom may be identical to ours during our stay here. Featuring a comfy king size bed, 2 nightstands, a work desk and chair, and a bedroom bench. Hanging all the way down from the ceiling is a suspended pendant light on each side of the bed. The bedroom also featured an inbuilt flatscreen TV.
The bedroom also had space for a walk-in closet which can also stand as a powder room. Bathrobes, slippers, iron, and ironing board were also made available in this space.
The bathroom featured a double vanity sink, a deep-soaking bathtub, a separate walk-in shower, and toilet. The rain shower has a good water pressure with instant hot water, and the shower cubicle itself was big enough to fit in 3 people at a time unlike that of Sheraton where the setup of the shower cubicle won’t allow 2 people to take a shower together.
Acca Kappa bath products were provided in the bathroom, and I gave credit to this hotel for providing those invigorating bath salts.
Going back to the generous welcome gift option which I mentioned earlier, the Suya (a spiced traditional smoked meat skewer/kebab) was delivered on a Marriott newspaper. The newspaper is one of the things that makes Suya even more traditional. But don’t eat the newspaper 😊
Surprisingly, another big bottle of wine accompanied the suya, including the half bottled of their house wine, fresh fruits, plus the hotel’s milk chocolate. Quite generous of the Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja.
Happy hour at the M Club wasn’t as good as it was in the Sheraton Club at the Sheraton Lagos Hotel, Ikeja. But one thing though, the Marriott shines with its’ suya. I spent a little bit of time in the lounge entertaining my guests.
The buffet breakfast, while it may be a big deal to many, it wasn’t anything extraordinary in my opinion. But again, I was only there on a 1 night stay, so I think it would be unfair to judge the breakfast offering at the lounge based on a single visit.
There was an omelet station where you can request a made-to-order egg. Sadly, food items like yam, fried plantain, jollof rice, and the curry chicken were all cold during breakfast. Something which I found to be disappointing.
The swimming pool area at this hotel is one of the best features here. This outdoor pool area was very conducive and picture-perfect. There is also a bar located at the poolside.
The gym was rather of a small size but has enough equipment to get your workout on.
In conclusion, this was a great stay at the Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja. While it wasn’t perfect and there was room for improvement, the hotel is no doubt one of the best in Lagos. And for 20K Marriott Bonvoy points a night, it was a solid redemption and value for money.
