The American Airlines first class on the widebody Boeing 777 is undoubtedly one of the best ways to fly domestic first out there. While this is not to be compared to the AA Flagship First, or even Flagship Business in any way, the hard product is pretty much the same since this type of widebody aircrafts are usually used for long-haul or transcon flights.
I recently received a question about this flight from one of our readers on Instagram and I thought I should publish my experience on this approximately 3 hours flight from New York JFK to Miami. Although this flight was booked and flown towards the end of 2021, the information published in this post is still very relevant and should be closer to what you’ll experience if you’re taking this flight in the nearest future.
It’s worth mentioning that American airlines does not offer this route as a Flagship product despite operating a Boeing 77W. And if you’re able to snag a seat in Row 1 or 2, you have secured yourself a true Flagship First seat which is being operated as domestic first.
BOOKING THIS FLIGHT:
Although gone are those days when we used to be able to book AA’s Flagship business class on Alaska airlines, this domestic First Class flight and my onward flight from Miami to Los Angeles in Flagship Business was booked with 25,000 Alaska miles plus $18 taxes and fees per passenger.
We began our pushback about 5 minutes behind the estimated departure time, and the food & beverage service began shortly after takeoff. Since this was a morning flight, turkey everything bagel sandwich was served with fresh berries, yogurt, banana, and granola. This was a great breakfast for that short flight.
The seat is arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration and was spacious and comfy. Due to the short duration of this flight, there was no pillow nor Casper blanket present on the seat.
My seat 3J eventually developed a technical problem and wouldn’t go into fully flat mode when I tried to get a quick nap. But one of the amazing flight attendants onboard quickly stepped in and reset the seat a few times. The recliner seemed to have been broken one way or the other, but it worked eventually. Unfortunately, the lie-flat seat wasn’t comfortable that much since there was a big gap between the seat itself and the recliner.
The lavatory was kept in good condition throughout the flight. As a matter of fact, it had more room than the lavatory in the business class of the Singapore Airlines Longest Flight in the World.
MY TAKE ON THIS FLIGHT:
While the 3 hours went by so quick, the experience onboard wasn’t bad at all. This flight provides an opportunity for many travelers to experience a bit of the American Airlines Flagship product without flying long haul. Despite the technical difficulty I experienced with the seat in bed mode, I still won’t hesitate to fly in this widebody from JFK to Miami or vice versa next time. The food and beverage was on point, and the overall service was great.
How do I get a 777 flat bed right today
Mike, it’s easier if you’re flexible with your travel plans. Some of these 777 lie-flat seats can be snagged last minute, or even a few weeks/months out. You just have to do your search strategically
